Many times we get motivated to be as healthy as we can be, but we don’t get a specific motivating factor that pushes us towards perfect health. The motivation is ever dynamic and we try our best to harness and utilize it to achieve the best. This paper will focus on the relevance of the health-illness continuum to patient care with an emphasis on the perspective of the current state of health.
The importance of perspective in relation to health
Figure 1: a graphical illustration of the health-illness continuum (Taqdir & et al, 2018)
The health-illness continuum ascertains that the state of health is a straight line. The above graphical illustration indicates that the left side of the line is associated with illness, disease, or even death while the right side indicates health to a point of high-level wellness. The mid-point is a point of neutrality, which is achieved by treatment and referred to as the non-illness state (Falvo & Holland, 2017). A nurse aims to guide the patient to the point of optimum health. The positive outlook of a patient will influence the whole emotional and mental awareness of wellbeing while the negative outlook hinders mental and emotional growth leading to depression.
The positive perspective is very important when caring for patients as it encourages the emotional and mental development of the individual. The patients become motivated towards better well-being which inhibits physical and emotional discomfort through measuring the place they lay on this scale. Another significant feature of the health-illness continuum is that it not only focuses on the treatment of the patient but also it attends to their overall wellbeing.
Understanding the health-illness continuum in virtue promotion
The health-illness continuum promotes human flourishing as it is thought of as a guide to achieving the desired basis of flourishing. It enables wellbeing on levels of physical, spiritual, and social needs. Also, it enables human beings to flourish in terms of morals for example reason, wisdom, temperance, justice among others. An instance, during clinical patient rounds, it requires courage from a nurse to emphasize the importance of a certain diagnosis and how it is addressed rather than staying shy and not mentioning. Working with a multidisciplinary team helps get the opportunities to develop some virtues and how to respond to interruptions (DeYoung, McCluskey, & Van, 2009).
