CPTED Recommendation
Crime prevention is essential for both government and private facilities. Warehouses distribution in the US is a major concern since they are mostly distributed in the outskirts of cities and towns where security surveillance is less. To safeguard the goods, a good security structure has to be laid down to prevent any possible risks the warehouse can be exposed to. Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) is one of the best crime prevention methods that enable neighborhoods to live in a friendly environment. This discussion focuses on the recommendations of key particulars on CPTED design with the advantages and disadvantages of using canines as security guards.
CPTED can be defined as the manipulation of the available environment to create a safe living environment. It involves various stakeholders such as architects, landscapers, city planners, and interior designers who use different physical ways to block possible crime avenues (Cozens, 2016). There are key particulars that have to be looked at when designing CPTED for a warehouse. Natural surveillance is one of the key techniques that can easily expose suspicious activity that may be carried out around the warehouse. The settings of physical structures such as the windows, balconies, and spacious parking lots makes it easy for the public to spot any suspicious activity and report it to the available authority.
It can also be recommended that the addition of CCTV cameras both inside and outside of the warehouse can increase the security safety of the warehouse. The addition of a small highway that passes near the warehouse increases the security as the pedestrians and motorcycles keep watch of any crime that might occur around it (Armitage, 2018). Access control is another particular that has to be looked at with keen consideration. Any possible entries to the warehouse compound have to be closed and make just one clear entry and exit, which needs to have tight security check-ups and inspections. The fence has to be well made to prevent any possible penetration to the inside compound.
Other access control measures such as planting thorny bushes under the windows, avoiding structures near the house that might provide access to the roof of the house, and increasing the fence's height above the shoulder are recommendable. Territorial reinforcement is another key measure that indicates confidence in ownership and protection of the property. The warehouse can reinforce security surveillance measures such as installing security signals at every point, increasing security lighting, and putting refreshments at the entry points, attracting the public's attention to the main gate (Cozens, 2016). Maintenance of the warehouse's physical settings is important as it maintains the confidence of the general public that the warehouse is well guarded.
Broken windows provide a clue that a residential or a warehouse is less guarded, making the building easily vandalized. When windows are strong and new, there is likely to be less of such vandalism cases. Therefore, recommending the management to maintain the warehouse's physical structures, such as replacing broken windows, replaci...
