Essay Instructions:

PART ONE: HISTORICAL CONTEXT – REC SPORTS IN THE ACADEMY (25% OF TOTAL)
Choose one (1) of the following and respond in an essay of roughly 750-1000 words
1) The Bowling Green State University rec sports website maintains a robust “history” page featuring a presentation entitled “BGSU Recreation and Wellness Through the Years.” To wit:
Select five (5) of what you believe to be the most important incidents or events on this timeline and, in combination with course readings and discussions, use them to write a short history of campus recreational sport in the U.S. and its relationship to the university as a whole.
2) In addition to the NIRSA rec sports textbook Campus Recreational Sports, available as always in Carmen, we have also read portions of a similar work from 1925, Mitchell’s Intramural Athletics, available as always in Carmen. In concert with any other course materials or discussions you find useful, use these two sources to write an essay discussing three (3) ways the philosophy, provision, and/or management of campus rec sport is similar today to how it was in 1925, and three (3) ways it is different.
PART TWO: NIRSA ROUNDTABLE ROUNDUP (25% OF TOTAL)
NIRSA offers an occasional series of virtual roundtables called "Ideas in Motion," which are available on NIRSA’s Youtube
Choose any NIRSA "Ideas in Motion" roundtable on any topic that interests you and summarize its contents in a précis of roughly 300 words.
PART THREE: FREE PLAY (25% OF TOTAL)
Choose any single chapter of the NIRSA text Campus Recreational Sports, available as always in Carmen, and summarize its contents in a précis of roughly 300 words. Try to select a chapter you have not already drawn upon heavily on your exam thus far.
PART FOUR: PROFESSIONAL SELF-DEFINITIONS (25% OF TOTAL)
Our Professional Self-Definitions module covers a number of theoretical frameworks by which rec sports professionals have sought to measure the value they provide to students and/or employees. Choose two (2) of these theoretical frameworks, explain them, and discuss how rec sports professionals might plausibly use them to shape how they manage student employees and/or provide value to the campus community at large.

For decades, different recreational sports programs in the USA have had an integral role on college campuses, especially as a compliment to the academic exposure and enhancing the quality of life that learners obtain at a learning institution. Recreational programs and facilities are used by the most students than any other programs. They have been fostering student recruitment and retention efforts in institutions. Below is a reflection of five essential incidents or events that will assist in describing a short history of campus recreational sports in the USA and its association with the university.
One of the important events at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) was the formation of the Athletic Committee created to monitor athletic and intramural sports in 1920. The Normal College Athletic Committee was created in 1920 to control and manage every athletic interest of BGSU (Bowling Green State University, n.d). On the other hand, the committee was responsible for controlling all intramural contests. The oldest faculty athletic committee showed the importance of special fees for athletics and intramurals. Moreover, membership consisted of the head of the Department of Physical Education and two faculty members selected by the President of the college where one was the secretary-treasurer.
To qualify to participate in certain scheduled contests, learners had to maintain a passing grade in 12 hours of work. Participating in athletics was rewarded by the committee after the coach's recommendation with medals, sweaters, and college letters.
