Edwina is right to say that the use of brief notes is unethical in the sense that such a practice goes contrary to the ACA code of ethics. Vital information about the performance of the supervise, evaluations and general counselling supervision is never included in the brief notes about ‘staffing cases’ (American Counselling Association, 2014).
Comments to Vincent’s post
According to Vincent’s observation, clinical supervisors sometimes feel uneasy because they are expected to play many roles. In most instances, a clinical supervisor is expected to be a documenter, recorder, evaluator, counselling administrator, mentor, consultant, teacher, and such roles can be overwhelming (Cecile, 2013). It is also a good idea for the supervisor to share some feedback as they make their observations.
Comments to Steve’s post
I do not agree with the Steve suggestion that the supervisor should inform the supervisor about their complaints instead of a higher authority because they are less likely to change. In fact, this may compromise their relationship. The most important ethical issues to look out for include confidentiality, informed consent, relationships and boundary concerns as well as vicarious liability (Cecile, 2013).
