Genocide is an internationally recognized crime in which committed actions are aimed at destroying partially or fully a racial, religious, ethnic, or national group. Various preexisting conditions can fuel genocide in the 21st century. A profoundly segmented society with clear political cleavages is one of the conditions that lead to genocide. According to Hasian (2019), a society segmented with a profound political divide is susceptible to genocide. The division is often fueled by political leaders who attack a certain community by spreading propaganda and lies about the group. For instance, during the last presidential campaign in the USA, Donald Trump retweeted antimuslim propaganda videos with the primary intention of maligning the race. Hasian (2019) noted that Trump-like actions fueled the greatest crimes in human history. Attacks directed at a certain class of people do not occur spontaneously. They are first organized before the targeted group is demonized via a campaign of spiteful chicanery, which the recipients often believe of the misinformation. This gives way to violence on the targeted group.
Rapid and profound social change is another major contributor to genocide. Genocide is a direct function of social distance and inequality (Hasian, 2019). Genocide is prevalent when the enemy lacks cultural similarity, intimacy, interdependence, and other forms of closeness to the targeted group. The aggressors often have military power and authority over the targeted group. This is evident in the war between Israel and Palestine. Due to rapid social change, the population of Israel increased, and Israelites got educated more than the Palestinians.
