Current and Future Issues of Homeland Security
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plays a critical role in enhancing security, preventing terrorism, and securing U.S borders. The future of homeland security will influence emergency management and United States’ security. Since the United States might be unable to prevent all terror attacks, DHS must be prepared to address the impact of catastrophic events (Lewis, 2019). Over the years, counterterrorism efforts have been the main concern for homeland security. The counterterrorism mission is likely to change in the future since the threat is cyclic and persistent. Revision of immigration proposal to allow new immigrants, change of counterterrorism mission, and adoption of modern technology will be the possible developments on the future of homeland security’s mission of deterring terror threats to the country.
Next Year- Immigration Proposal to allow New Immigrants
President Biden’s administration focuses on reversing immigration restrictions to the United States by former president Biden. Since 2021, Biden has implemented new strategies, such as preserving deportation relief, boosting asylum seekers, and allowing legal entry to unauthorized immigrants (Ries, 2020). Over the next year, Biden’s administration will increase the number of new immigrants while providing a legal pathway for the few individuals who might have moved to the country illegally.
The comprehensive legislation by president Biden will have a far-reaching impact on the United States’ security. For instance, fewer criminals will have to move to the country, thus enhancing border security. In this case, the DHS will deploy fewer resources to deter illegal immigrants to the United States while improving security levels. Similarly, asylum seekers will have a chance to live in the country without compromising border security (Ries, 2020). During the tenure of President Donald Trump, travel restrictions posed a significant constraint, which resulted in increased cases of threats and malicious acts by criminals. Over the next year, immigrants to the United States will receive the proper documentation that will allow them to live and work in the country.
In the future, the United States should uphold a pathway for undocumented immigrants to enhance border security and boost the economy. In this case, the individuals who move to the country will have a chance to apply for citizenship. Ries (2020) argues that the strategy will have far-reaching benefits to the government through decreased border security costs. Therefore, the United States will channel the extra funds towards other development agendas. A key objective should be creating a legal pathway for undocumented immigrants if they pass background checks. Equally, DHS can waive presence requirements for the immigrants who might have been deported during the leadership of Donald Trump. As a result, the country would clear the visa backlog to improve the employment verification.
