Poverty and Inequality
Social work promotes cohesion, development, social change, and empowerment of communities and people. It involves understanding how human beings behave and their interactions in social, cultural, and economic institutions (Sumner, 2019). According to the World Bank, poverty is a noticeable deprivation of the well-being of human beings. Inequality, on the other hand, can be described as a lack of equity in different circumstances. There are different types of poverty and how they affect how people run their day to day activities. Inequality is also diverse, and it affects the livelihoods of people. This topic will discuss how poverty and inequality can be controlled to promote human development, social change, and community empowerment.
Poverty has destructive consequences on the people who experience it. A child born in a low-income family is most likely to be lacking when they become adults. A tiny percentage of children born in well-off families end up being poor when they become adults. Children from low family backgrounds have no access to good education, and at times they can have no education at all. A child is most likely to drop out of school when the area surrounding them is not conducive. When someone is poor, they are not in a position to afford the general basic needs. It is hard for a hungry child to concentrate in class (Van Den Berg, Plante, Raïq, Proulx, & Faustmann, 2017). When the children drop out, there is a possibility of them becoming teenage parents, which advances the poverty level of a community of the state.
Poverty affects the way families interact with their members. A low-income family is at risk of experiencing problems like domestic violence and divorce. When people start a family, each and everyone has a role to play to ensure the family grows together. Paying bills can be challenging for a low-income family, causing stress to all the family members. In most family settings, it is the role of a man to provide for his family. The inability of a man to provided food and shelter can cause friction between his spouses. The wife will start blaming the husband and start to influence her children to disrespect their father. The disrespect and blaming of each other can result in domestic violence (Van Den Berg, Plante, Raïq, Proulx, & Faustmann, 2017). Continued domestic divorce can be toxic, and instead, the families with these problems opt for divorce.
The health of a poor community or society is jeopardized. Poor people are at risk of experiencing health problems like mental illness, premature adult and child deaths. Lack of sufficient health care is common in low-income families. In most countries, medical services are not offered for free but are charged. It is not possible for a low-income family that cannot provide for their basic needs to pay medical bills. Lack of proper nutrition can cause serious health issues in children, promoting high fatality rates in children.
