Hebidge’s chapter on Bleached Roots is perhaps one of the most prominent and significant studies in the field of cultural studies for it focuses on how previously existing paradigms (i.e., semiotic theory) relate to the idea of developing cultural phenomenon in the society. Nevertheless, in his paper, he believed that British Punk, as a subculture of expression for some White British, was inadequate, static, and is “incapable of renewal” due to differences between its origin (the reggae and dub), which originated from the Black Americans. To prove his point, he first discussed the history of White British Punk as a popular subculture that gave its followers an avenue to express their distinctiveness compared to the famous “white glam rock” with the use of explicit lyrics and languages....
