The issue of eldercare and elder needs in Singapore has become increasingly relevant due to the aging population. To address this, Singapore has implemented an Eldercare Masterplan, which has increased service providers offering seniors various hospital-based and home-based care services. However, there are criticisms of services and policies related to eldercare, such as funding, staffing, and quality of care (Hillier & Barrow, 2014). Based on these factors, this essay will explore how to appraise and criticize a service and policy regarding eldercare and elder needs.
Policy
Understanding the main features of the policy and how it impacts older individuals is crucial to evaluating or criticizing policies regarding eldercare and the needs of older people in Singapore. Hillier & Barrow's in their book "Aging, the Individual, and Society" (2014) offers a helpful framework for assessing and criticizing the initiative. For instance, they suggest that during evaluation, it is critical to consider how the policy addresses the social and cultural demands as well as the physical and mental health needs of older persons. One could also assess the care's affordability, accessibility, and ability to cater to the particular needs of senior citizens.
