Two Explanations for "Why Democracy Declined in Venezuela?"

Essay Instructions:

This week, you read two articles/book excerpts on contemporary Venezuela: one by Moses Naim and Francisco Toro, and a second by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. These two pieces present different explanations for why democracy in Venezuela declined in the late 1990s/2000s. This assignment uses the case of Venezuela to help you practice the skills you will use in your final paper assignment and on the final exam. In a one-page essay, please answer the following questions:
What are the two explanations for why democracy declined in Venezuela discussed in Naim & Toro (2018) and Levitsky & Ziblatt (2018)?
What kind of evidence do Naim & Toro (2018) and Levitsky & Ziblatt (2018) use to assess their explanations (based on the passages that you were assigned)?
Which of these two arguments do you find more convincing? Why?
Please include a topic sentence that states your main argument about which analysis you find more convincing. In addition to the two readings, lecture 18 on why democracy declines and the excerpt from Ellen Lust and David Waldner (2015) will help you complete this assignment.
