Scholars of many disciplines tend to be more familiar with the existence of people like Aristotle and Plato as renowned philosophers without minding to know the meaning of the term philosophy in the first place. This definition seems to overlap with the definition of another mode of knowledge inquiry, science. To elucidate the concept of philosophy without any contradiction with science, it is better understood when broken down into three major topics: epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics.
Metaphysics is a study that deals with philosophical problems that incline towards questioning the existence of things and the state of nature. A typical metaphysic problem is a question on whether God exists or not. Although such problems that question the nature and reality might lack a definite answer, a logical explanation is sufficient. Epistemology, on the other hand, which seems to complement science, is concerned with studying the nature of knowledge and the capabilities of humans attributed to the knowledge they have acquired. It is possible for one to be knowledgeable in a particular domain and have none or negligible knowledge in something else, a view that is termed in philosophy as skepticism. In a case where skepticism prevails, common beliefs and availability of evidence take precedence and relevance.
