Ivory trade has been operating illegally for centuries, even before world civilization. This discussion identifies and discusses its nature and extent, the leading players involved, the factors driving this trade, its economic and political consequences, and finally, its national and international consequences.
Nature and Extent
This illicit trade mainly involves the poaching of elephants for their tusks and affects the geographical areas of Africa and Asia continents. The primary source of ivory is the African elephant. Poachers kill the animals, take the tusks, and illegally ship them to outside markets, especially in Asia, where they fetch high prices in the black market. The locals in these countries use them for religious purposes and the making of ornaments. From the primitive trading practices centuries ago, when the ivory was transported using caravans, the mode of transport has evolved into sea and air transport.
