Methods to Assess Efficacy in Local/Municipal Law Enforcement Agency
The objective of municipal law enforcement agencies is to implement and reinforce laws in the community. It is not an easy task; therefore, it is significant to have strategies that would see the success of that endeavor. The following are methods that can assess efficacy in local law enforcement agencies.
Reduction of Crime Rates
As discussed, protection is a top priority in every organization. Law enforcement agencies are focused on achieving that objective. Therefore, crime rates in the community will determine the efficacy of that particular agency (Cordner, 2014). For example, if a community has high crime rates, the law enforcement agencies in that area are ineffective. In other terms, the law agencies are ineffective if the crime rates are high. On the contrary, if the crime rates are manageable or relatively low over time, it means the law agency is effective. Crime rates are the top method to determine the efficacy of a local law agency.
Clearance of Cases
Clearance cases can be described as the number of uncompleted files in a law agency. In most cases, police departments are faced with this problem. Uncleared cases demonstrate ineffectiveness and also injustice (Joel, 2018). These cases are used in the court of law to administer justice to the involved parties. Thus, if a local law agency has uncleared cases and the number of files is unimaginable, it is automatically a failing agency.
Community Response
Law agencies mainly serve the local community. in this scenario, the first encounter is the community and neighborhoods. If the community members are always complaining about the law agency, it reflects underperformance (Joel, 2018). Community response is an excellent strategy to measure the performance of a municipal law enforcement agency. A positive response is a reflection of efficacy in the policing agency.
