Dealing with kids in a school setup is usually a fascinating exercise. It enables one to come across various personalities and characters, both good and bad. Children under foster care are no different. As a counselor, dealing with the calls for some considerations as well as skills. Every person is entitled to the right to dignified life. The controversial question is, who bears the burden of ensuring this fundamental right to children? Is it the government or the parents? Moreover, if the burden is solely placed upon the latter, what happens to parents who do not have a sustainable economic activity to ensure the decent life? Such are critical questions that we need to look at as a society (Wilkins, J., & Terlitsky, A. B., 2016).
Values and ethical principles are core components of counseling, and as such, I have to clearly define my personal values which would affect my relationships with the clients (Wilkins, J., & Terlitsky, A. B., 2016). Of the many personal values I have, I greatly uphold honesty, respect, autonomy, integrity, and responsibility. All of these in one way or another are more likely to affect my relationship with the clients. For example, respect. I believe respect is paramount in any kind of conversation and environment. To ensure professionalism, I will respect all my clients, including their ideas and decisions. I would also expect the clients to respect me back and maintain professionalism during my service delivery.
Secondly, I am quite an honest person. Therefore, I will be very frank and concise when offering working suggestions to the clients. I acknowledge the fact that the truth hurts most times, but I will not shy away from telling the truth in all cases. This value might make the clients shy away, especially when they are not comfortable with my honesty. I, however, have emotional intelligence, and would therefore not just lay things bare, as honest as they might be. From my training as a counselor, it is important to know how to deliver some news or message, especially if they are bound to hurt the client in a way.
Sensitivity is key in this profession, and it is what the clients subtly plead for in some cases. Similarly, I would not be comfortable handling dishonest clients. It will be hard to continue offering my services to untruthful persons. To get to the bottom of an issue, I believe that every detail of the problem needs to be put in the open (Villa, R. A., & Thousand, J. S., 2016). This calls for the establishment of trust between me as a counselor and my client. Openness is like a backbone in counseling, and it only comes through the establishment of trust between individuals.
Autonomy, responsibility, and integrity would both positively and negatively affect the relationship between me and the clients. I take responsibilities for every of my action, and as such, I would develop a close relationship with the client. Besides, being autonomous, I can make independent decisions which are helpful to the clients. Autonomy and integrity will enable me to develop and sustain a working relationship with the clients. They will believe in my knowledge and win my trust (Wilkins, J., & Terlitsky, A. B., 2016).
