New York is by far one of the biggest cities in the world. As the host of the headquarters of the United Nations, nothing declares the city’s importance to the world than this. Aside from playing host to the UN, New York is also home to some of the most famous buildings in the world. Some of these include the Empire State Building (which was at one the ruler of the skies), the Chrysler Building, and the Seagram Building. These are monumental and help ensure that the city holds its status as a megacity. Its status as a megacity is also due to the fact that it is made up of five county-level administrative divisions namely Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and The Bronx.
The reason for choosing New York is simply the fact that it is the city that embodies what it means to be American. In this city, anyone can make a home there. People from different countries have made their way into the city thus making it one of the most diverse cities in the world. At times, the significance of a city lies in its culture, people, aspects like diversity, etc., and there is no other place in the world that rivals New York with regard to such factors.
As already indicated, diversity is one of the great assets of the city. According to Statistical Atlas (2018), the city is made up of 32.3% white residents, 26.7% Hispanics, 24.4% African Americans, 13.7% Asians, 1.8% mixed, and other is 1.1%. From these statistics, there is indeed no truer image of diversity than the one painted by New York City. The city is also quite rich and ranks highly when compared to other megacities in the world. In the U.S., it is the wealthiest and McCamy (2019) notes that its GDP of $1.5 trillion compares to that of Canada and South Korea. Major companies also have their offices there. Examples include IBM, PepsiCo, JPMorgan Chase, Deloitte, Verizon, Pricewaterhouse Coopers or PWC among others.
New York City is interesting as a tourist attraction site, a home, and a business hub. However, there are other interesting historical facts about the city that makes it more memorable. The first one is that it is less than 400 years old. Less than 400 years ago, there was no city with the name New York. But, in 1609, Henry Hudson became the city’s beacon of hope as he found Manhattan. It should be noted that the Hudson River gets the name Hudson from him. After Hudson’s expedition and confidence in the potential of the land, the idea of New York City was conceived.
