The portrayal of women in Proof (2000) and Doubt (2008)
The position of women in society has been critical in the modern world. Women have often been at the forefront of fighting for equality. In a patriarchal society, men have tended to oppress women. While some women have accepted such oppression, others have risen up to fight anything that demeans them because of their gender. The struggle brought about by gender bias is critical in both John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt, A Parable and Proof by David Auburn. While the female characters in Proof are strong-willed, the ones in Doubt have accepted the status quo in the patriarchal society.
In Proof, both Catherine and Claire are strong-willed women. Catherine is kind and brilliant while Claire is educated, polished and aggressive. Claire is focused on doing what she believes is the right thing. She is concerned about her image and she will do anything to maintain it. There is no doubt that Claire loves an exciting life. Hence, Claire shifts from Chicago and proceeds to settle in New York City where she can pursue her dreams (Auburn). In the play, Claire is portrayed as someone who cares for materialistic things. Claire left her father Robert and Catherine to make a life for herself in the city. Similarly, Catherine is a lady who is determined to do whatever she desires.
