I agree with Lakiter that communities in the past utilized hallucinogens to elicit the presence of spirits of their ancestors. The spirits guided them in making crucial decisions of war and leadership. Currently, Native Americans utilize the mescaline hallucinogen in their religious ceremonies. Additionally, in the past, the use of hallucinogen such as LSD was to treat addictions to alcohol and opium while today, hallucinogen such as benzydamine hydrochloride is used to treat inflammation on soft tissues and joints and sore throats (Balaban, Atagun, Yilmaz, Yazar & Alpkan, 2013, p. 276)
Dana’s characterization of the medicinal use of hallucinogens is accurate. According to Levinthal, in 1960s Psychologists first utilized Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) to treat schizophrenia, as a way of gathering knowledge of the subconscious mind (2016, p. 116). Currently, hallucinogens such as ketamine are used in hospitals and by veterinary for its anesthetic properties. Spiritually, churches utilized them in religious rituals to create spiritual experiences while today some churches burn them as incense in religious functions.
