Part 1
There is increased recognition that nursing leadership is crucial to quality improvement and better patient outcome. Effective use of communication and interpersonal skills differentiates leaders from the managers who use delegated power to get things done. However, the managers have more definite responsibilities as they make decisions and control activities, highlighting the need for both nurse leaders and managers. Typically, nurses need leadership and management skills. Leadership competence is a critical component of nursing leadership that focuses on improving safety (Thompson, Navarra, & Antonson, 2005). The choice of the selected bedside shift hand-off project can be used to understand how management and leadership skills affect implementation of changes. In my experience, nurses give direction and have influence since they are able to give direction on achieving the vision even without seemingly using control.
