International law helps define the legal responsibility of a State in conduct among themselves and how they treat people within the boundaries of the State. Human rights are among the issues that international law covers. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) ensures that the U.N. member states do not disregard or show contempt for human rights. According to international law, the International Criminal Court is responsible for settling disputes brought forth by the State (United Nations, 2021). However, the U.N. and International Criminal Court are faced with difficulties while enforcing human rights when U.N. and CHR member states turn a blind eye to human rights violations.
In 2015, the U.N. wrote a report indicating that Eritrea had violated human rights on a massive scale (Maddox, 2015). The Eritrea government was said to be responsible for the widespread and uncultivated violation of human rights, which had forced hundreds of thousands of refugees to flee their country. The activity involved interviewing over 500 witnesses where they heard accounts of such activities as extrajudicial killings, sexual slavery, and forced labor. Within the report was information on the methods used by the Eritrea government, meant to maintain its control over the population. The witnesses complained of such areas as surveillance which violates their right to privacy, being denied their freedom of movement as it is extremely difficult to move in and out of the country, lack of freedom of expression, and being denied the freedom of religion (Maddox, 2015). The member state should be the one protecting the well-being of the citizens, but if the State is involved in these unfair practices, it makes it difficult for the government to implement the law of human rights.
