The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women was approved and endorsed in 1979 by the General Assembly as an internationally recognized bill of rights for women.
Of the 200 million hours spent fetching water daily, women are accountable for three-quarters of it. In most poor rural communities, water remains to be an important part of the primary domestic chores performed by females. In Cochabamba, it was unlawful and against custom for women to be involved in matters regarding water apart from collecting it and using it for domestic chores.
Human trafficking is defined in the Palermo Protocol as the forceful recruitment, transportation, or receipt of persons, or the payment for another person for exploitation purposes (Gills & Jacobs, 2020). Trafficking may be for commercial sexual exploitation where young girls and women are forced into sexual abuse activities for the financial benefits of any other person, or forced labor which involves enslaving people into a system of bonded labor. Push and pull factors of poverty and demand, and neoliberal policies are some of the causes of trafficking. Poverty and increased demand for labor in destinations that promise better life makes a community’s people vulnerable to trafficking. Neoliberals’ economic policies have allowed for free trade that limits and abolishes the role of labor rights and unions in promoting workers' welfare hence fueling trafficking operations.
Western countries’ response to genital cutting in non-western countries is distorted and somehow misguided since they victimize the non-western women by viewing them through an oppression lens. Western women activism ought to view the female genital cutting as a historical complexity. Moreover, many of these activist roles have to be homegrown to address the social aspect of the practice. Western female genital cosmetic surgeries have become popular because of their coverage and mainstreaming in media and the Western veneration of youth.
The United Nations Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women has not been ratified in the United States because of her institutional rules governing treaties, Democrats and Republican partisan conflict over the agenda, and the changing geopolitical climate that alters her standing on women’s rights.
