In the United States alone, it is estimated that more than 15,000 foreigners are trafficked every year. It has also been indicated that more than 200,000 children are at risk of being trafficked and joining the sex industry. However, reporting sex trafficking cases on media outlets has been biased as it fails to provide actual statistics helpful in showing the seriousness of the crime.
An article on the City News Everywhere website titled “Human trafficking in your backyard” written by Cristina Howorun reported how sex trafficking rings have grown in Canada. The article provides the reader with crucial and graphic information about the crime. However, it fails to provide actual statistics about the number of victims affected. News reporting such as this should provide essential details that would help explain the seriousness of the issue. However, the author indicates no concrete information on the exact number of victims as not every person affected goes to the police. The author depends solely on numbers provided by the police. Further information can be found on non-governmental organizations dealing with such cases. Furthermore, the information provided by such organizations is unbiased because there are no reasons for them to hide the truth.
On the Global News website, Emily Mertz, through her article titled “15-year-old Edmonton girl rescued from human trafficking, 35 charges laid: ALERT,” provides information about how a 15-year-old girl was rescued from human traffickers. She indicates that she got the information from the police, which indicates that the syndicate has been operating for several years. However, the author fails to provide essential data and statistics to show the seriousness of the issue. Several peer-reviewed articles have touched on the issue and provided sufficient information.
