This essay assignment asks that you research and analyze a grassroots social justice movement for which food is a central issue, tactic, or strategy. You must make an analytical argument which derives a generalizable political lesson about approaches to social transformation from the specific food justice-related movement you examine. Topics may range from labor rights movement among farm or food factory workers, to consumer boycott campaigns against a specific food commodity or industry, to the use of free food as an organizing tool or the waging of hunger strikes in a social justice campaign, and more.
Map the context relevant to this transformative effort and identify its key actors, populations, stake holders, and opponents. Examine what tactics and strategies participants employ in their pursuit of social transformation. This could include media exposure, advocacy, direct action, civil disobedience, community-based action, litigation, movement-based research, (non)violence, specific decision-making models, and much more. Who/what did the movement target? Governing bodies and officials? Private actors? Cultural institutions? How did authorities react? Did the movement face backlash? Repression? Did this resistance achieve its aims? Other victories large or small? Discuss the strengths, weaknesses, conflicts within, and effects of this movement. What do you believe was won and what was lost?
