Can the world provide an adequate standard of living for the projected 2.6 billion people by the year 2050 without causing widespread environmental damage?
Yes, the world can sustain the projected increase in population. First, there is increased adoption of better technologies which can help us move from our fossil fuel dependence as the source of our energy. Fossil fuels are the main pollutants, and if technology can create an alternative way of providing enough energy for the projected 10 billion people in the world, then the population is sustainable. Today, however, more governments are turning to renewable sources of energy which can replace our dependence on fossil fuels. New technologies have developed batteries with higher energy density leading to breakthroughs in new technologies such as electric cars CITATION MIT18 \l 1033 (MIT Technology Review, 2018). There are also several breakthroughs of how to utilize fossil fuels and managing the byproducts especially carbon dioxide. Therefore, if the technology can be widely adopted, earth’s sustainability can be restored.
