The city and film are historically connected and related. The rise of the film was primarily inspired by urbanization, and until today, most films are developed around cities. Cities have proved to be at the center of most cinematic settings and subjects. Most films document life in the town like crime, fashion, and romance, among other film interest topics. City life evolves with time, and films store fundamental memory in the film industry. On the other hand, films also create cities. For instance, famous cities in a film like Mumbai and Mexico have been designed differently by cinema. Most movies have created Mexico City as the center of drug trafficking, making most people believe it in reality. Films also create films differently using fantasies that impact the real life of people. Therefore, a film often reflects the social lives of people. This paper uses the film "The Killer" to demonstrate how film reflects cities' social perception.
"The Killer" is a 1989 Chinese film written and directed by John Woo. It stars Danny Lee, Jennie (Sally Yeh), and Ah Jong (Chow Yun-fat). The film is set in Hong Kong city. Ah Jong accidentally damages the eyes of Jennie, a singer, during a shootout and later learns that Jennie needs expensive surgery to enable her to see again. After the shootout, Ah Jong escorts Jennie to her apartment. The frequent visits to Jennie make the two fall in love. Ah Jong decides to help her raise the money by performing one last hit to raise the money for Jennie's medication. Li Ying, a police officer, spots Ah Jong in her mission but eventually loses him. In this last job, Ah Jong's boss is Wong Hoi, the Triad boss, who decides to double-cross Ah Jong (iTelCamStudio, 2019). He sends people to kill Ah Jong instead of paying him his dues. Ah Jong escapes the attack, but a child is injured in the process. Ah Jong decides to take the child to the hospital while being followed by Li and his partner. The child gets well, and Ah Jong escapes the wrath of Li and Tsang.
Li is furious about Ah Jong's mercy and care towards Jennie. Together with Tsang, Li finds that Ah Jong has been visiting Jennie in her apartment and plans to ambush him. During the ambush, Ah Jong luckily escapes. Li and Tsang tell Jennie that Ah Jong is the hitman who got her blind during the shootout in the nightclub. Fung Sei, the Triad's manager, promises to bring Ah Jong's payment after he was confronted. Instead of money, he gives Ah Jong a suitcase full of paper sheets. Ah Jong and Li get caught up in another shootout after an ambush by the Triad. Ah Jong tells Li to donate his eyes to Jennie if he dies in the fight or use the money to fly Jennie oversees for a world-class eye operation. In a church, Ah Jong, Li, and Jennie wait for Sei to bring the money. Sei arrives with the money but terribly beaten, and Ah Jong shoots Sei out of Mercy to end his suffering. Ah Jong also dies in a shootout in the church when Wong Hoi ambushes them. Li shoots Hoi as he mourns Ah Jong (iTelCamStudio, 2019).
