An ethical dilemma in coaching based on communication involves how to handle feedback from clients while handling the situation appropriately. Specifically, an ethical dilemma can arise during providing feedback where it will be regarded as a confrontation (Nelson-Jones, 2007). Feedback is often based on the client's specific needs and perceptions. The feedback can be a threat or a challenge to their self-image.
Confrontation is a type of feedback where the client's self-image is threatened. This is an ethical dilemma since the confrontations will involve inconsistencies, such as actions and words (Nelson-Jones, 2007). It can also be in the form of a disordered reality, such as focusing on inconvenient feedback. An ethical dilemma in coaching based on storage of coaching records includes coaching supervision, record keeping, use of assessments. For instance, an ethical dilemma arises due to disclosure of record-keeping approaches. It is hard to establish the right time to release the information, or what can be regarded as appropriate data that can be shared with clients (Drogin et al. 2010). Even though it has benefits, an ethical dilemma arises since it exposes the coaches to risk, such as lawsuits.
First, it is imperative to ensure that the records are confidential and that they will not be accessed by an unwanted party. Confidentiality is based on ethical standards, regulation, and law. It is crucial to preserve the confidentiality of the data which engenders trust in the coaching profession, and it ensures that clients get the required services without a fear that their information will be shared with other parties (Drogin et al. 2010). Secondly, clients should also be informed about the extend and nature or record-keeping practices. This ensures that they are aware of how the data is used (Drogin et al. 2010).
