When dealing with the global environment, there are a few ways in which states overcome the free rider problem. One primary way the problem is dealt with is by encouraging people not to be altruistic and assume responsibility. When it comes to protecting the environment, it is paramount that as many people be involved (Fletcher, 2017). States agencies that deal with environmental issues do a lot of work to encourage citizens to be responsible and protect their environment and not ride on the benefits/ deeds of other people. Measures such as carrying out campaigns educating people on the need to care for the environment at an individual level potentially reduce the free rider problem (Falkner, 2017).
The international community often finds itself between a rock and a hard place while trying to convince countries to protect the environment while such efforts cause lower production outputs and increased costs.
