According to the producers and characters in the movie, smoking marijuana is the primary cause of deviant behavior. From the onset of the movie, the producers make it clear that marijuana is a violent narcotic drug that induces among other dangerous hallucinations, disturbances, inability to process thoughts, shocking violence and eventually insanity. Throughout the scenes, the characters have endeavored to portray these effects. For instance, due to intoxication, Jimmy runs over a pedestrian, Billy Harper begins an affair with an older woman named Blanche; while Jack accidentally shoots Mary to death.
