Design and Construction of Burj Khalifa
In Dubai, UAE, stands the tallest building ever built, the Burj Khalifa. With a height of 828 meters, the skyscraper is truly a magnificent engineering wonder. It might be easy to say that it would be nice to have similar skyscrapers everywhere, but constructing such a complex structure undoubtedly came with its own set of challenges. Undeniably, building tall structures is not easy, and several factors have to be considered before starting such a big project. I will be discussing what I believe are the three biggest challenges that were encountered during the construction of the Burj Khalifa and how said challenges have been dealt with. 
Proper Foundation
Ideally, to build a strong foundation, the ground needs to be solid. However, being situated in the desert of Dubai, the ground that the Burj Khalifa is standing on is weak fractured rocks saturated with groundwaters, which can’t carry that much weight and can cause the structure to sink into the ground. To build a proper foundation, deep boreholes were dug in the soil and were filled with viscous polymer slurry, which pushes the groundwater and rock fragments to the edge of the boreholes to prevent the structure from caving in. Concrete was then poured, displacing the slurry, forming foundation piles that were strong enough to prevent the structure from sinking in. 
Heights and Winds
Burj Khalifa, being the tallest building in the world, is exposed to harsh winds, which can affect the structure in many ways. It can cause the skyscraper to move sideways or swing. If the swing is too fast, people inside the building may suffer from seasickness. In Bu...
