Politics play a vital role in modern organizations, including schools, churches, sports teams, and volunteer organizations. Nevertheless, politics and political behaviors have become a bitter and vicious reality in the lives of organizations as we constantly get involved in office politics. Office or organizational politics are socially influencing behaviors strategically designed to maximize self-serving behaviors or self-interests (Bashir et al., 2019). According to Marcus (2017), we have learned that we cannot simply avoid office politics as it is a fact of life. I have observed several events involving office politics that have involved personal attacks and bandwagon fallacies. In this paper, I describe one of the office politics I have watched and share important strategies for dealing with the issues.
My cousin, Jennifer, was a dynamic and cultured young graduate from one of the most prestigious colleges in the country. However, she was taking a high road by disregarding office politics. Nevertheless, her lack of attention to what was happening in her workplace became extremely dangerous. She was an ambitious woman working in a highly competitive male-dominated workplace.
