Kabeer et al.’s (2021) “Feminist Economic Perspectives on the COVID-19 Pandemic” portrays how the coronavirus has affected working women and men. In reality, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly contributed to death, disrupted livelihoods and markets, and adversely impacted individuals’ health (Kabeer, Razavi, & Rodgers, 2021). In many countries, females were relatively more affected by lockdown orders than males, leading to a decline in women's employment. Women experienced significant losses of jobs since they are the majority of low-wage service workers, including hospitality, retail, and food service. Government regulations, such as stay-at-home and lockdown orders led to the closure of many businesses, resulting in an increased rate of female unemployment (Kabeer, Razavi, & Rodgers, 2021). Moreover, many women embarked on unpaid home care services during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is systematically invisible and undervalued.
I agree with the authors that many women lost their jobs and livelihoods during the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, females working in low-wage jobs or those who identify as frontline workers are more than males. The lockdown measures significantly affected these jobs, resulting in numerous women losing their jobs. Others decided to resign from their work so that they can take care of their children and other family members. Since females are good in home care, they were the ones who took care of family members who got infected. Unfortunately, home care is invisible and unpaid.
In my opinion, the authors have covered credible reasons that contributed to a significant number of women losing their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
