I would like additional clarification on what Buck means by the "psychological wage" and how this relates broadly to the drainage system and racism.
From earlier in the semester, I would also like additional elucidation on the concept of intersectionality and how it differs from simply acknowledging multiple dimensions of identity. How does intersectionality function in relation to race and gender? Understanding people’s experiences that consider the many dimensions of identities is critical instead of viewing race, class, and gender as separate and distinct issues. Gillborn (2015) notes that “race” is socially constructed and that “racial difference” is an invention perpetuated and reinforced by society, where minority and marginalized groups are subject to dynamic stereotypes. The question of gender also fell under the same scope. Women, especially white elites, were considered critical in labor management and not simply productive. All the payments, much as women performed more of the labor tasks, were made to men (Buck, 2001, p44). I would like to understand these stereotypes and what coerces the underlying identities.
I had not realized that so many associations were organized based on white supremacy in the early 1900s, and it’s striking to see how pervasive racism was in such influential organizations. The aspect of race has gradually developed different connotations from the past. Guess (2006) notes concern about America's interactive duality of whiteness and race. What does it constitute to be termed white in America and the global community? I found Buck’s discussion of "whiteness" particularly compelling because it helps to deconstruct how race is a social construct that accrues certain privileges and power dynamics.
