Globalization is undoubtedly one of the most common phenomena of today’s modern world. The concept itself has changed the dynamics of the human world, transcending all areas from politics, social interactions, communication, transport, and most importantly, business and corporate growth. There have been notable changes in the corporate form before and since the onset of globalization. Ideally, globalization is a process through which corporations or other organizations gain worldwide influence or begin functioning on a global scale. The sheer definition suggests that the phenomena would drastically change a company. It is possible to illustrate the history of corporate form before and after globalization and later analyze how civil society challenges corporate power while offering alternatives to it using the concept of corporate personhood and corporate power.
Corporate personhood is when a corporation exists independently of its associated human beings such as the owners, company administration, employees, or shareholders. A company is said to have at least some of the legal rights and responsibilities accorded to natural persons (Birch et al., 2017, Chapter 3:The corporate revolution). As a separate legal entity, a company faces seemingly similar effects from globalization. Initially, companies separated independently from the rest of the world; there was minimum competition since each firm was limited geographically.
