8-1 question    When developing and implementing an adult support group, the following important guidelines should be considered: how the group is organized, how the format of each group session is structured, and what the short- and long-term outcomes of the group are. Consider the following three adult support groups: an HIV/AIDS support group, a support group for college students, and a domestic violence support group. What similarities do you see, and how do these similarities suggest guidelines for developing these groups?

Even though, the three support groups serve different purposes, they each have a common objective that is achievable for all the group members. There is a need for clarity on the required process to meet the goals of each group, as this facilitates disclosure and cohesion (Corey et al., 2013). Members have expectations that their needs will be met either partially or completely. The HIV/ AIDS support group expect acceptance among members who share similar experiences, including stigma, but also advice on managing their conditions. The student group members expect that there is sharing and discussion on issues affecting students, while domestic violence group members expect support and acceptance as their share their concerns.

People in the three groups face challenges of not being fully accepted and being misunderstood by other people. To strengthen social and emotional support it is necessary to maintain confidentiality as this fosters trust among members who have common goals (Lane, 2015). Additionally, joining the groups empowers the individuals to make positive decisions and be advocates for change in the case of domestic violence support group there is likelihood of trauma, highlighting the need for psychosocial support.
