Climate Change in Porter County May Result in Food Insecurity
Porter County, Indiana, has earned a corn reputation for the longest time as it produces pounds of corn yearly. However, with time, the number of agricultural products produced in this region continues to decrease. According to Carter et al. (2018), the primary contributor to this factor is the increase in annual average temperature. From 1985 to the present, a 1.2 degree Fahrenheit increase in temperature has been recorded, but by 2050 a higher increase of 6 degrees Fahrenheit is expected if changes are not made (Bowling et al., 2020). The rise in temperature in this region is attributed to humans' burning of fossil fuels and gases emitted from greenhouses. As a result of the emitted gases in the atmosphere, they trap heat, which causes a temperature rise.
Drought is the most severe threat that may result from climate change in Porter County. The drought in the summer is likely to be more intense due to climate change, affecting food availability. According to Bowling et al. (2020), in 2012, intense drought in the summer caused farmers to replant soya beans because what they had planted was not growing. Additionally, there was an average of a 38% reduction in total corn produced during the same year. According to Carter et al. (2018), as the temperature rises due to climate change, so does the amount of agricultural products produced in this community decline. When there are no agricultural products, food insecurity may arise.
The community is vulnerable because, as a result of climate change, cases of flooding and drought are expected. With an increase in temperature levels in a region, there is an increase in the amount of water that osmoses from land and gets into the atmosphere (Bowling et al., 2020). Due to this, floods are experienced in the community, resulting in water r...
