Refugee by Alan Gratz
“Refugee” is a prolific book focused on youngster literature that Alan Gratz authored. It centers on three protagonists that lived in three distinct eras. The eras are the 1990s Cuba, Nazi Germany and contemporary Syria. Josef, Mahmoud and Isabel are the three protagonists in this intriguing novel. Josef lives in the infamous era of Nazi Germany that gravely affects his family because of the concentration camps’ reality. He eloped with his family to seek solace and freedom in other world parts. Isabel lives in the 1990s Cuban era that was characterized by political riots and restlessness (Gratz 29). They flee with her family to the United States in the elusive hope that they would find protection and freedom in a foreign land. On the other hand, Mahmoud and his family from Syria start their European journey to avoid the massive violence and damage that was on-going in his country.
In Kiyo Sato’s, Kiyo’s Story book, the storyline is akin to Mahmoud’s story in the “Refugee” book because both base on the tribulations that immigrants face in foreign lands. The common factor is the United States as the destination that these two books establish as the dream before they leave their home. The problems that come after their settlement in this land are gravely severe because they involve political unrest and other social predicaments that make their lives troubled. In Kiyo’s Story, Shinji Sato’s family cultivated their economic ground in California to build a great business that crumbled down with the onset of the infamous World War II. The family was sent to an internment camp in Poston, which marked the beginning of unforeseen hardships in a foreign nation. The discrimination that followed after the camp’s time was also indisputably inhumane. Sato describes “Wherever I go I feel the daggers of hate – in look, in newspapers and at school.
