The rise of Charter schools has caused a tremendous change in the structure and nature of public schools. One major characteristic of Charter schools has been the privatization of schools by wealthy individuals. According to Hazen et al. 2016, schools have become a target for private enterprises rather than a public assets controlled by a democratic government. Charter schools do not aim for academic excellence but as sectors for gaining more power and control.
Praise for Charter schools has been about the opportunities and flexibilities it offers all children to access education and successfully move to college. Hence, one significant advantage of Charter schools is their flexibility and accountability in preparing students for college (CBS, 2008). Nevertheless, the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to Charter schools. Public schools were meant to bring equity to education, but Charter schools have moved from providing equity to privatizing and altering schools.
