Populism has been increasing in many countries and has produced numerous implications in the political and economic spheres. Notably, populism refers to varied political stances that emphasize a people-centric ideology, differentiating the group from the rich or elite in society. Latin America has lasting marks of populism in the world (Mainwaring & Scully, 2008). This is defined by the social, political, and economic inequalities experienced in the region. Therefore, politicians capitalize on these resentments to propel their populist ideologies.
In Latin America, inequalities are one of the significant causes of populism. The lack of inclusiveness is the driving narrative by populists since society is divided between the wealthy and the poor masses (Roberts, 2007). In regions like Argentina, this is a widespread issue that has impacted many people even though there are much educated middle class. Another cause of populism in Latin America is the pursuit to mediate between the rich and poor within the region (Houle & Kenny, 2018). Therefore, to appeal to the masses, populists promise to address housing issues, basic social amenities, and redistribution of wealth. However, the ability to address these issues after gaining power is nearly impossible.
