GEOG 1000A
Assignment #3
Tutorial Clinic: March 12th/13th 2020
ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE: March 19th/20th 2020
The purpose of this assignment is to develop your skills in identifying, accessing, mapping andanalyzing data from national and international statistical agencies.Your goal is to produce a report that answers the following questions:• What are the immigration/settlement patterns in Canada for a migrant source country thatyou will choose?• What are the transnational linkages forged between Canada and that country through cashremittances?• What is the significance of those remittances for the home country?• How does that country seek to foster ongoing connections with its diaspora? To start, think of an immigrant community in Toronto that comes from a specific country oforigin. (It would be a good idea to make sure the source country is included in the report in step#4 below). Then, complete your assignment by following these steps (training videos will beposted to Moodle to show you how to complete most steps):1) Explain briefly why you selected your chosen source country and what you expected to find.(50 words max) (Weighting=10%)2) Produce two column graphs on Excel to show the number of immigrants arriving from thatcountry, as both permanent residents (PR) of Canada and as temporary foreign workers(TFW), over at least a five year period. Your data should come from these hyperlinks to theFacts and Figures report of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Be sure tochoose the appropriate data tabulation, and to produce charts that are accurately titled, properly labelled and appropriately scaled. Comment on any trends that you see in thenumbers of arrivals, and on the source country’s relative importance in Canada’s overallinflows of these two types of migrants. (See Video 1, Video 2, and Video 3)(2 charts; 150 words max) (Weighting=20%)3) Map (to the ‘census tract’ or ‘dissemination area’ level) the residential distribution of theimmigrant community from your source country in the Toronto region (you can decide onthe outer boundaries, but stick roughly to the GTA). For this you will use York Library’sSimply Analytics portal. Then, a produce a second map (at the same scale) showing a socioeconomic variable (e.g. average household income, or incidence of poverty). For both maps, think carefully about the variables that you use and the editing options on the map so thatthe distribution is clear. Download the completed maps and print them in colour if you can(marks will not be deducted if you can’t, but select shading accordingly). Provide a shortcommentary that reflects thoughtfully on the patterns that you see in the residential andsocio-economic maps, and any relationship between them. Please log out of SimplyAnalytics when you have finished using it. (See Video 4)(2 maps; 200 words max) (Weighting=20%)4) Find out how much money is sent back by migrants to the country of origin from Canada. For this information you will look at a 2019 report from Statistics Canada (see page 27) thatincludes data on international cash transfers sent around the world from communities inCanada. Comment on the total amount, and the per person amount, that the report revealsare sent to your chosen source country. How do these figures compare with other migrantsource countries? Why might this be the case? (See Video 5)(200 words max) (Weighting=10%)5) Find out how much money is sent back to the source country from ALL parts of the world(not just Canada). How important are money transfers for the country of origin? Inparticular, what percentage of GDP (a measure of the economy’s size) do remittancesrepresent? To find out, you will access the World Bank’s Migration and RemittancesDatabase. How do these figures for your source country compare with other countries?Comment and speculate thoughtfully on this comparison. (See Video 6)(100 words max) (Weighting=10%)6) How does the annual remittance sent per person from Canada (found in Step #4) comparewith the annual GDP per capita in your chosen source country? For this comparison you willuse the United Nations data portal. How else is your selected country connected to globalsystems? Show this through indicators of a) internet connectivity, b) CO2 emissions percapita, and c) exports as a % of GDP. Describe what you have found. (See Video 7)(150 words max) (Weighting=10%)7) Using at least one academic source (found through a search on Web ofScience, Scopus or Proquest), explain how your source country reaches out to its diasporato encourage investment, travel, tourism or some other kind of ongoing connection. Inyour search, include the name of the country AND the keyword “diaspora”, and includeother keywords (such as strategy, engagement, investment, tourism, travel, or economy). Ifyou need assistance with finding an article you can “Chat with a Librarian”, Text/SMS, orget In-Person research help on the 2nd Floor of Scott Library. For more information goto: https://www.library.yorku.ca/web/ask-services/. (See Video 8)(200 words max) (Weighting=20%)Notes:• This assignment does not have to be in a continuous essay format. Each element can beexecuted as a separate section. The written paragraphs should, however, be written usingprofessional language and carefully edited. Your graphical and mapping output should alsobe carefully produced with appropriate titles, labels etc.• You MUST use the original data sources indicated above and they should be appropriatelycited and included, along with any other sources, in a bibliography (in APA format).• Your cover page should include the word count, your name, your student number, your TA’sname, time/day of tutorial, and date of submission.• All assignments should be submitted in hard copy in your tutorial on the due date, andthrough Turnitin.com on the Moodle site (before 11.59pm on the due date).• Remember, you have/had 5 grace days to use across the whole year. 1 Explain why you selected your chosen source country and what you expected to find.
Filipino Immigrant Community in Toronto
Several Filipinos are circling the globe due to the lack of support from the government, as evident in the lack of job opportunities in the country, whether blue- or white-collar jobs (Bernarte & Llagas, 2015). Therefore, this group is the best one to be studied.
2 Produce two column graphs on Excel to show the number of immigrants arriving from that country, as both permanent residents (PR) of Canada and as temporary foreign workers (TFW), over at least five years.

Figure 2.1. The Population of the Permanent Immigrants from the Philippines in Canada Form 2013-2017
The figure shows that the population of permanent Filipino immigrants in Canada fluctuated overtime, where there is a steady increase followed by a steady outflow. Overall, these numbers represent the working class in Canada since the majority of the immigrants work with blue-collar jobs or as healthcare workers, particularly nurses (Racine, 2018).

Figure 2. The Population of the Temporary Filipino Workers in Canada from 2013-2017
There is a steady and steep decline in the number of TFW in Canada from 2013- to 2017. This might be due to the changes in the immigration policy of Canada that made it difficult for foreigners to enter the country. Thus, reducing the inflow of workers. There is also an issue regarding the prioritization of the locals over foreign nationals. Thus, favoring the former than the latter (Root, Gates-Gasse, Shields, & Bauder, 2014).
Generally, from 2012, Prime Minister Justine Trudeau refused the application for a visitor’s visa of more than one million foreign nationals (around 18% of the total number of applicants). This was just the beginning of the era of the difficulties. By 2017, around twenty-six percent of the total number of visa applicants were rejected. Moreover, it is especially harder to enter the country if the foreign national is from countries where civil and political wars are evident. The Canadian government also stated that this is a precautionary measure to prevent foreigners from relocating illegally CITATION Kel18 \l 1033 (Keller, 2018).

2 Find out how much money is sent back by migrants to the country of origin from Canada.
The contributed a total of $ 1, 216, 100 USD in 2017. An average of $2, 654 is contributed by a single migrant. Among the countries listed, the Philippines has the highest individual and total amount of remittances in Canada CITATION Dim19 \l 1033 (Dimbuene & Turcotte, 2019). This may be secondary to their large population, as evidenced by Figures 2.1 and 2.2.
