RE: SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES DURING ADOLESCENCE
I am writing to let you know that you are about to enter a critical stage of your development that is full of experiences ranging from social to emotional.
Being your elder sister and having gone through this stage, I am glad to share my experiences with you so that you can avoid some of the mistakes I indulged in during my time. First of all, let me share with you both the social and emotional experiences you are likely to go through. At adolescence, your first task will be to identify yourself. This is knowing who you are and where you belong in the world. Ensure to identify yourself with good models. You will also feel like you want to be independent (Helsen, Vollebergh, & Meeus, 2000). This is likely to affect your relationship with you members of the family as you may want to live an isolated life where you do not want to be influenced by your parents. It is good to be aware of this so that you can calm down (Helsen, Vollebergh, & Meeus, 2000). Another very important social change you will experience is seeking new experiences. This may drive you into engaging in very risk behaviors such as engaging in sexual behaviors. Remember at this time you are experiencing those puberty changes you learned from your biology teacher, and I have no doubt you know what they are (Steinberg, 2008). There are so many risks related to immorality that this stage may drive you to so it is important to take control and share with me whenever you think that you are over-powered.
You will also be influenced by your peers. You will easily copy their behaviors without your knowledge. Do not regret like I did. I associated with bad friends, and I almost messed my life. I tasted some of the drugs they were abusing. My performance in school dropped drastically, simply becaus...
