Essay Instructions:

You should view each video several times and take notes on how the breach was done, as well as how people reacted to the breach. Your goal is to collect sufficient observational data on people’s reactions to be able to draw reasonable conclusions about how strongly and uniformly people react when this folkway is broken.
In reviewing your four videos make sure that each video does present the beginning of the breach and the full reactions to the breach.
Be sure to observe people’s full range of responses to the folkway breach including any nonverbal reactions. Pay close attention to the ways that people try to “repair” the social rupture the folkway violation has caused. People may respond by giving disapproving looks, laughing, or lecturing. You may also find that a common response to folkway violations is to “act” as if nothing at all is wrong – this would be the “whatever – I have seen it all before” blasé response that is often a cover for people’s discomfort with unexpected behavior.
Step 4: Write-Up (prior to Lesson 7)
This last step is pretty straightforward and should be quite easy if you have put the necessary thought and time into Steps 1 to 3. You will write a minimum five (5) paragraph summary about your four breaching videos. Be sure to include ALL of the following five (5) sections (grading rubric) details in your essay.
Section 1 – Your Introductory Paragraph
This is the description of your design. In it you will summarize the ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘when’, and ‘why’ of your decisions. This should contextualize your chosen folkway and how it was broken in the four YouTube videos you chose. The summary you submitted to me for approval should provide a useful starting point for this. Give me the specifics!
Section 2 – What happened / How did people react / Debriefing Responses
Here you will provide an overview of each of the four YouTube videos you chose to review (and which were approved by your instructor) concerning breaking social norms (breaching).
Specifically describe how people reacted to your chosen folkway breach in the videos you selected. What did they say? What did they do nonverbally? In other words, explain what you were able to observe in the videos. Include detail on the reactions of the people in the scene. Were there any consistencies in reactions? Did they differ by age or gender of the person? Also, if the videos showed a debriefing afterwards, where the subjects were made aware of the deliberate breach, what did the subjects say when they were debriefed?
Section 3 – Your feelings about the broken folkway?
Describe your own response to the breached folkway. Exactly what did you learn from the assignment? Is it fine to give you honest view about the breaching exercise. Your grade will be based on the thoroughness of your response and not on whether your response fits into my social world.
Section 4 – Textbook Connections to Sociology!
Here you will demonstrate your ability to think and write like a sociologist. This is where you discuss or interpret what you have observed in terms of what you have learned. In other words, you will need to frame your explanations of the results of your experiment using a sociological perspective or point-of-view. As an individual you might explain the results of your experiment based on your personal opinion by formulating and answering the questions: 1) why do you think people acted as they did, and 2) how do you think you would feel if you were in that situation? The sociologist would discuss the results in terms of sociological theory for example by formulating and answering the questions in terms of Goffman’s dramaturgic theory, e.g. according to Goffman’s dramaturgic theory, why did people react as they did? According to Goffman’s dramaturgic theory, why did you feel as you did? You may use the above example or frame your explanation in a context of your own.
Additionally, you are REQUIRED to make another three (3) textbook connections! This means I want you to 1) identify three (3) specific theories, major concepts, and/or major ideas, 2) define each of them, and 3) explain each of these connections to your breaching experiment! To help you, BOLD FACE these additional three textbook connections!
Be sure to cite the page of the textbook where you found the definition and include quotations around the definition of you are directly quoting from the text. For each definition you should include a source in-text which says (Ferris & Stein, 2014, p.____).
Section 5 – Conclusion
Simply take four (4) sentences or so to highlight the main points of your paper!

Asian Experiment on Eating Dog Meat
There are differing cultural views on whether eating dog meat is morally acceptable. In this paper, four videos are reviewed. The first video is by Asian Boss (2019) on whether all the Chinese eat dog meat. In the video, the interviewer approaches Chinese respondents on the streets of Shanghai and enquires about their experience with dog meat and their view on the Westerners' stereotype that all Chinese eat dog meat. The second video is also by Asian Boss (2019) on whether Koreans eat dog meat. Similarly, the interviewer questions random pedestrians in Seoul and asks if the respondents have had dog meat before and their view on the stereotype. The third video is a journalistic report by Nelufar Hedayat (2017), and Unreported World reporter, presenting an investigative piece on stealing dogs for meat in Vietnam. The final video is a street interview by DKDKTV (2018) on what Koreans think about dog meat.
In the first video, all Chinese respondents stated that they were aware of the stereotype. Incidentally, only some are okay with the stereotype, but others feel offended. The offended claim that the Westerners are ignorant and hypocritical, believing that all Chinese people eat dog meat. They believe the misinformation is often from social media platforms. Those who have had dogmeat say it is lovely, mainly marinated, depending on how it is prepared. In the second video, many claim that eating dog meat is not common in Korea and that they have never tried it. Moreover, they state the West is misinformed. Most claim that eating dog meat was a traditional way of survival since there was little to eat. In the third video, dog meat is a typical dish prepared in restaurants and events. Multiple vehicles carrying dogs can be seen in the background. Those being interviewed explain that dogs are stolen every day. Shockingly, dog thieves are beaten to death and risk time in prison. Unlike China and Korea, Vietnam has a different relationship with dogs. Dogs are both food that is valuable and also pet and guard dogs. The final video presents Korea, where people have tasted dog meat. Noticeably, the pro-dog meat respondents were significantly older than the anti-dog meat respondents.
