Human trafficking, forced labor, and human exploitation have risen exponentially over the years and have proven to be a significant humanitarian issue in the United States and the world. Every year, millions of cases involving victims of all races, ages, gender, or nationalities are reported globally, indicating a colossal threat requiring immediate intervention. In the United States, human trafficking is a prevalent challenge affecting various communities throughout the country. As a result, the United States, through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has declared fighting human trafficking and exploitation of humans a national priority and has dedicated considerable efforts and resources towards combating this problem.
To integrate these efforts to curb the ever-rising problem, the DHS, in collaboration with several stakeholders, launched the Center for Countering Human Trafficking (CCHT) in a bid to dismantle human trafficking organizations, provide support to victims and the vulnerable members of the society, and raise awareness on the methods and dangers of human trafficking (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, 2021). In addition, the DHS has also developed a working Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking, the Importation of Goods Produced with Forced Labor, and Child Sexual Exploitation as a long-term approach to combat the issue. This paper analyzes the strategy’s five main objectives: prevention, protection, prosecution, partnership, and enabling DHS, and outlines the steps taken by the department to ensure the achievement of these goals.
Goal 1: Prevention
The DHS is committed to advancing coordinated measures at both the state and federal levels to nip the problem of human trafficking and exploitation at the bud. One crucial measure it adopts is to empower the community by providing adequate information explicitly aimed at the vulnerable population to enable them to resist the deception and manipulation by human traffickers. In addition, law enforcement officers working for the DHS visit community and school-based groups to provide training to children on how to defend themselves in dangerous situations (Walker, 2020). These measures, when applied successfully, enable the department to avert potential cases.
Goal 2: Protection
