6-1: Is it possible to utilize the solution-focused approach while also working within the traditional 12-step recovery model? Why or why not? Explain by providing specific examples.
Response to Jacqline’s Comments
Jacqline posits that numerous approaches can be differentiated based on values of the change processes and components and that most therapists on use one approach in the management of disorders. Such approaches include strategic therapy enables a therapist to take the responsibility of using most effective ways to help clients distress (Chermack et al., 2017). Regarding the solution-focused approach, Jacqline suggests that it focuses on brief therapy through specialized interview procedure in negotiating a treatment goal that brings about efficiency and effectiveness on treatment. However, she objects that such approach cannot be used alongside 12-step program since it does not view addiction as a disease. Thus, empowering a client seems incompatible with the first step in the 12-step program. For example, a client may claim that he is powerless in regards to an addiction which is part of the 12-step and yet the solution-focused approach provides power to the client where since therapist acts on the client's frame of reference (Chermack et al., 2017).
Comments to Ashley's Response
Ashley says that solution-focused approach is part of strategic therapy approach and can be used successfully alongside the 12-step recovery model. This is because the 12-step recovery model brings encouragement to the client hence the client can exercise power within his frame of references such as attending meetings (Riger, Bennett, & Sigurvinsdottir, 2014). Therefore, it helps the client explore coping skills that enhance long term sobriety as well as helping the client learning healthier ways of solving addiction problems in their everyday lives. Through this approach, the caregiver helps the client to recognize that he or she can have the power to control choices they make regarding substance abuse even if they render themselves powerless due to the 12-step model. For example, a client who has a notion that addiction is a disease and he has no power to control it may be advised by his or her therapist for assurances to overcome the problem such as "You are a healthy person, you have managed to reach this far, Yeah you are a hero not a victim". This encouragement makes the client self-assured that he can have control on the urge to use the substance hence he or she can control it (Chermack et al., 2017)
