Psychology in Children
2-1: The topics that will be tackled in the class are initiative vs. guilt development tasks so that 3 to 5 year-old children will know how to take responsibility for themselves. The topics are play and imagination, storytelling, independence, social and emotional development which gives children the freedom to think on their own. The play and imagination are recognized by Erickson as means through which children learn about themselves and the social world (Psychology Notes HQ, 20102). These topics were chosen because during this stage, children learn the concept of imagination and skills are developed by involving them in activities. The topics will be led by asking children to form in groups and act out family scenes and important occupations like teacher, nurse, doctor, and roles from TV.
2-2: When the concept of attachment is applied to children, those that strongly bond with an adult have a better chance of surviving difficult times. This means that forming an attachment with fathers, grandparents, or someone else who is caring and strong are helpful. One indicator of attachment is when children are crying and searching because they perform adaptive responses to separation from a primary attachment figure- someone who provides support, protection, and care (Fraley, 2010).
3-1: A good advice is to get to know the friends of the child because during this stage they have more significance in the child’s source of growth and self-esteem (Mcleod, 2013). The parent should encourage and reinforce initiative to give them the confidence to achieve goals. Once the child gains the initiative to achieve goals, he will stop playing video games too often and his focus will improve. This also lessens the distractions around him and he can ponder on where he is good at.
3-2: I agree that the media has an effect on the social behavior of children, which is why it is important for parents to find out how much media exposure they should allow. According to Pediatric and Child Health (2003), television has the potential to generate both positive and negative effects. The ones that show violence, and offensive language should not be allowed. If the show contains sex, proper guidance should be given to the child to give him or her a better understanding about it.
The development of a child involves a lot of factors, but with proper guidance, they will become well-rounded individuals.
