The minority groups have been subjected to different forms of discrimination, and these entire stem from the fact that one belongs to the Hispanic, African-American, or the Asian ethnic group. Regardless of place or setting, some members of the minority groups have been on the receiving end of some of the meanest forms of racial discrimination. In the workplaces, for example, employees from the minority groups have had to deal with a myriad of frustrations with regards to promotions, salary increments etc. Social, as well as structural barriers in the workplace, have made it hard for the minority groups to get value for their effort and this discourages many of them.
Two examples of social barriers that might account for racial discrimination in the workplace include stereotypes and ethnocentrism. Stereotypes represent the assumptions with regards to the behavior of certain people of a specific community or ethnic background. Most of these stereotypes paint a negative picture of people, and if propagated in the workplace might lead to the segregation of a certain group of people. Ethnocentrism, on the other hand, denotes the behavior of using one’s group values and beliefs as the yardstick for other groups.
