Values Survey Reflection
Introduction
To reiterate my earlier assertions, values play a significant role in helping people identify what is important to them. According to Rokeach (1973), the two fundamental categories of values are terminal and instrumental values. Terminal values represent what one would wish to accomplish in the long run. On the other hand, instrumental values refer to the behaviors or the means through which one can achieve terminal values. My topmost instrumental values are self-control, love, and excellence. On the flip side, the terminal values that rank highly in my list are freedom, social recognition, and happiness.
Instrumental Values
As indicated above, my top three instrumental values are self-control, love, and excellence, in that respective order. In my reasonable view, self-control supersedes the other values. The rationale behind my decision to give self-control pole position is because, without it, all the other values are unachievable. Whenever I exercise self-control, I will have the capacity to refrain from indulging in things that may tempt and distract me from reaching my full potential (Harappa, 2020). In a nutshell, self-control will always play a pivotal role in defining my success. In addition, it will mold me into a dependable leader since I will always be well poised to make informed decisions.
Second on my list of instrumental values is love. According to Tobore (2020), some scholars define love as the inclination to treat other people positively. Another notable characteristic of love, which will help me become an outstanding leader, is putting other people’s interests ahead of mine. Regarding leadership, love will help me interact freely with my followers; this will give me a firsthand understanding of their needs and how to address them effectively.
Last but not least, on my list of instrumental values is attaining excellence in all my undertakings. In actual fact, this value encompasses the two values that precede it, as far as my list goes.
