Rewards and Punishments in Ezekiel 18
God's concept of rewarding those who keep his commands and punishing those who transgress is one that encompasses the whole Bible. The book of Ezekiel points out to the period in which Israel rebelled against God before they even left Egypt (Ezekiel 20). Ezekiel asserts that the righteous children will not suffer for their parent's transgression, nor will the wicked benefit from their parent's righteousness.
His audience however faces a challenge in this since they do not give up on their predictable knowledge of punishment and guilt. God takes the initiative of removing the foundations of this unworthy idea and assures them in Eze 18:3, Eze 18:4; that he is not a respecter of persons and strongly intimates this by the mysteries of providence in which he administers justice that is manifested in rewards and punishment
