Many ancient scripts governed the biblical world. Among them were Paul’s scriptures that promoted collectivism, the Christians of Corinth promoted the reciprocity culture, and finally, Colossians and Ephesians as they enabled a patriarchal family system (Witherington, 2014). Collectivist, reciprocity, and patriarchal family cultures were predominant in the biblical era. In this ancient era, the collectivist mindset was different from the individualistic mindset of the modern world. In ancient cultures, people were identified by their groups, which included gender, generation, and geographical factors. This is well presented by people being identified by where they came from or their religious affiliation, for example, Simon of Cyrene and Joseph of Arimathea. Consequently, referring to the person’s geographical origin. Identification with an individual’s religious affiliation would be Simon the Pharisee or Simon the Zealot.
The ancient culture also promoted patriarchal family systems, where their father's names would identify individuals. An example of this would be John, son of Zebedee, or Simon bar Jonah. Additional factors that affected the ancient cultures were their traditional reciprocity and economic systems. Consequently, they had no democracies when conducting businesses which meant that there were no free markets.
