This essay will give an insight on a question about how other 12th century cross-reliquaries are able to keep their original structure, but have different sorts at the same time? For instance, when looking at the example of the Zwiefalten, the loca sancta relics all belong to one group surrounding the cross and are linked together with the main central relic. This main relic is the True Cross to combine a space. In addition, the space will be used for salvation, which is an area of redemption.
Professor Biance Kuehnel agrees that this representation is known. Furthermore, Andre Gabar, Josef Engemann and Kurt Weizmann all have given the foundations of this part of art history (Kuehnel, 1999). The terminology “loca sancta and the Representational Arts of Palestine”was provided by Kurt Weizmann and the article discusses how the Holy Places have an impact on how biblical stories bring forth the sanctity of the sites. However, the connections in the events and places where salvation occurred no longer use images but are passed on by a written piece or oral tradition. The Zieftan Reliquary demonstrates this properly.
In the context, there is a mention of an account found in a chronicle that speaks of the lid used by the Vatican Box. There is a different interpretation given: “A piece of the rock… a stone from the Holy Sepulcher…a stone from Calvary…” These mentioned events do not correctly match the relics that are given in the 12th century reliquary by using photos.
