Response to Question 1: Genesis 1:1-2:4a
The date of the creation story found in Genesis 1:1-2:4a is estimated to have been between the year1446 Before Christ and 1406 Before Christ when Moses died. A probable likelihood is in the year in which Israel spent encamping at Sinai in the wilderness when Moses most likely composed the books of Leviticus and Exodus. The authorship of the book is attributed to Moses. Even though it is not specifically pointed out anywhere that Moses is the author, sections of the Pentateuch reveal the vital role played by Moses in its making. It is reasonable to assert that the substance and the core of the Pentateuch books are Moses’ works. The historical setting is when God was preparing the land for Israel. According to the Sinai Covenant, God promised to give the land to Israel. Genesis 1:1-2:4a tells readers that God owns the land since he created and prepared it, and can give it to anyone he wants. The concerns the writers might have been trying to communicate is that they intend their creation story to relate to their reader that God, the universe’s creator, has prepared the land as a home for man, who is his special creature, and actually has a plan for blessing all his creatures.
