Contemporary Issues in Science and Technology
Different Aspects of the Discipline
Science and technology go hand in hand; in essence, they complement each other. Science involves employing a systematic process to collect data, whereas, on the other hand, technology refers to applying science to the creation of appliances that can carry out different functions. For instance, scientists rely on technology to conduct their experiments. The symbiotic relationship between the two disciplines has existed since time immemorial. In addition, the two disciplines have considerably influenced the creation of new occupations in society (Martinez, 2018). As such, they have enhanced the demand for employees having relevant expertise. In addition, science and technology have adversely eroded ethical standards. Admittedly, due to technological and scientific advancements, many people today tend to behave recklessly. Regarding the legal aspect, the two disciplines have contributed to major breakthroughs in solving social malpractices. However, the two disciplines have also contributed to the emergence of major problems that continue to afflict the world. One of these major problems is cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying
Internet use continues to be on an upsurge primarily due to its enhanced effectiveness. However, there is an emerging and worrying trend whereby some people, especially the young generation, are perpetrating bullying using such electronic gadgets as computers and smartphones (Zhu et al., 2021). In essence, the culprits intentionally and repeatedly use cyberspace to cause emotional harm to others. As such, the problem has affected many aspects of their lives, including invading their privacy and causing psychological disorders. For instance, many victims of cyber attacks exhibit high levels of depression, loneliness, and apprehension. This has enormously affected their social interactions. The prevalence of the problem continues to escalate at an alarming rate. As Zhu et al. (2021) put it, research revealed that about 57.5% of children and adolescents had fallen victim to cyberbullying. The same study also established that 26% of children of the same age group had perpetrated the problem.
Social and Professional Context of Cyberbullying
On the social front, cyberbullying continues to wreak havoc as far as privacy and mental health are concerned. Research has shown that the practice is relatively more depressing than other forms of bullying because the perpetrators often remain anonymous. Due to their anonymity, they tend to be excessively ruthless. Scholars have established that cyberbullying victims usually manifest various psychological problems (YehudaPeled, 2019). The problems include low esteem and depression. By extension, the problems lead to undesirable habits such as drug use, alcoholism, and poor academic performance among students. In addition, cyberbullying affects interpersonal relationships since victims tend to keep to themselves. The problem is important to me because I have had first-hand experience. Therefore, I understand the problem only too well, and I would want everything...
